Puberty Terms

Biological terms and their meanings

WordMeaning
circumcision surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis usually done within the first couple weeks of life
ejaculation the release of semen from the penis during climax or nocturnal emission
epididymis cord along the testes that store the sperm until they mature
erection the penis becomes stiff and enlarged
fallopian tubes two tubes that go from the uterus to each of the ovaries, sperm fertilize the egg in the tube
genitals the external reproductive organs of either the male or the female
labia two pairs of skin folds on either side of the openings to the urethra and vagina
menstrual cycle monthly cycle, at ovulation the lining of the uterus gets thicker, if fertilization does not take, the lining leaves the body as menstrual flow
menstruation discharge of blood and tissue from the uterus through the vagina every twenty-eight days
nocturnal emission the release of semen during sleep as the body's way of releasing excess sperm
ovaries two female sex glands that produce the egg and the female hormone, estrogen
ovulation the process of releasing an egg cell from the ovary
ovum female egg released from the ovary once a month beginning at puberty
penis the external male reproductive organ
scrotum this skin sac holds the testes outside the body between the legs
semen milky-white fluid secreted by the glands of the male reproductive system and released during ejaculation
sexual intercourse male placing his erect penis into the vagina of a female, a pregnancy may result
sperm the male germ cell which are produced in the testes and released in semen during ejaculation
testes or testicles two glands that produce the male hormone testosterone and sperm cells
urethra tube that runs from the urinary bladder out of the body
vagina tube that leads from the outside of the body to the opening of the uterus, is the exit for menstrual flow or for a baby to be born
vas deferens two tubes that carry the sperm from the epididymis to the urethra
vulva term for external female genitals
uterus hollow, muscular, pear-shaped organ where the developing baby grows if a woman is pregnant
