chapter 7 part 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Diffusion | the gradual spreading of a substance from high to low concentration |
| Osmosis | the diffusion of water through a membrane from a high to low concentration |
| Hypertonic solution | a solution high in tonic low in water |
| Hypotonic solution | a solution low in tonic high in water |
| Isotonic solution | when the concentration of tonic & water are the same on both sides of the membrane |
| Turgor pressure | when plant cells take on so much water that the cell membrane passes out against the cell wall this causes the plant to stand erect |
| Plasmolysis | when a cell loses so much water it shrivels up |
| Cytolysis | when an animal cell takes on so much water that it bursts |
| Passive transport | is a natural occurrence of material flowing into the cell from high to low concentration without the need of energy |
| Active transport | the movement of material in the cell from low to high concentration REQURING THE CELLS ENERGY |
| Carrier molecule | are proteins that carry material across the cell membrane from low to high concentration |
| Equilibrium | a point at which there is a balance between opposite forces or processes |
| Semipermeable | allowing certain substances to pass through it but not others |
| Endocytosis | taking in of matter by a living cell by invagination of its membrane to form a vacuole |
| Exocytosis | the process in which the cell release materials to the outside by dis charging term as membrane bounded vesicles passing through the cell membrane |
