TermDefinition
Mechanical Digestion the physical breakdown of food into small pieces.
Chemical Digestion Breakdown of large particles into smaller ones by enzymes.
Enzymes A substance used to carry out chemical digestion.
Peristalsis Contraction of muscle tissue that lines the esophagus.
Gastric Juice Composed of mucus, hydrochloric acid, water and digestive enzymes, in the stomach to mix with the food.
Villi small, finger-like projections. (inner surface of small intestine)
Microvilli smaller finger-like projections that increase the surface area of the stomach for absorption.
Diaphragm Muscle in your chest which moves up and down when you exhale and inhale.
Bronchi tube-like passages in the lungs which bring in oxygen-rich air.
Bronchioles the narrowing of the bronchi
Alveoli tiny air-filled sacs surrounded by capillaries which allow gas exchange to occur.
Atria The top 2 chambers of the heart
Ventricles The bottom 2 chambers of the heart
Capillaries Between arteries and veins and are able to allow for gases to diffuse in and out of them
White Blood Cells fight infections
Platelets Cells to stop bleeding
Urea Waste disposed by the kidneys
Nephrons Filtering units in the kidneys
Dialysis a machine that removes wastes from the blood that a kidney normally would
Neurons Specialized cells in the nervous system that sends and receives messages
Dendrites Projections of neurons which receive incoming messages nerve impulses
Axon Carries nerve impulses from the dendrites and cell body of the neuron and to neighboring nerve cells.
Central Nervous System (CNS) composed of the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) composed of the head and spinal nerve
