| divergent evolution | The process by which an interbreeding population or species diverges into two or more descendant species, resulting in once similar or related species to become more and more dissimilar |
| deoxyribonucleic acid | a self-replicating material which is present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information. |
| double helix | a pair of parallel helices intertwined about a common axis, especially that in the structure of the DNA molecule. |
