Adapt + Physio T1
Term 1 of Physiology and Adaptation
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are the three aims of digestion? | 1) to intake energy for metabolism, 2) to provide Organic compounds for growth etc, 3) Intake of essential nutrients. |
| What are essential nutrients? | Nutrients (such as vitamins etc) which cannot be synthesised by the organism but are required (Mg is needed as a cofactor etc). |
| Two major elements required for the synythesis of almost all organic compounds used? | Carbon and Nitrogen |
| Not all material is usable by an organism, some is, demonstrate this simply: | Indigestible material is excreted as Faeces (can't be broken down on first pass through), Unmetabolisable material is excreted as urine (typically excess), Metabolisable energy. |
| Metabolisable energy is used in two specific ways, what are they? | Specific Dynamic Action (SDA) is the increase of the thermal activity of an organism after ingestion (excess energy released as heat by respiring cells?) And Net Energy for metabolism. |
