| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| active transport | movement of molecules from low density to higher density, requiring energy. |
| chloroplast | cell structure found in plants where photosynthesis occurs |
| diffusion | movement of molecules from areas of high density to lower density. |
| eukaryotes | cells that a have a true nuclus |
| golgi apparatus | cell structure that packages materials to be moved out of the cell |
| Cell Wall | A rough, rigid structure outside the plasma membrane of plants, fungi, plant-like protists, and some bacteria; gives support and protection |
| Centriole | Pair of structures in animal cells that duplicate to aid in cell reproduction |
| Cilia | Short, beating, hair-like structures on the surface of some cells; help with movement of organism and fluids/materials along the surface of the cell |
| Cytoplasm | Clear fluid surrounding the nucleus and organelles of eukaryotic cells; site of many chemical reactions |
| Cytoskeleton | Fibers and filaments in eukaryotic cells in eukaryotic cells that provide support for the cell and organelles |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum (Rough ER) | Folded network of membranes that create a transport system in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells; rough in lined with ribosomes |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum (Smooth ER) | Same as Rough ER, except the smooth ER is not lined with ribosomes |
| Flagella | Long, thread-like structures used to propel an organism with a whipping motion |
| Lysosome | Organelle that contains enzymes digesting food particles, viruses, bacteria, worn out cells, and sometimes the cell itself; cleans the cell |
| Mitochondria | Breaks food particles down to produce ATP molecules or energy/power |
| Nucleolus | Area in the nucleus that produces ribosomes |
| Nuclear Envelope | Membrane around the nucleus controlling what enters and leaves the nucleus |
| Nucleus | Largest membrane-bound organelle in eukaryotic cells; contains DNA and controls all of the cell’s functions |
| Plasma Membrane | Boundary between the cell and its environment; allows certain materials to pass through |
| Ribosome | Organelles that put together long chains of proteins |
| Vacuole | Membrane-bound, fluid filled space within the cytoplasm that stores water, food, enzymes, and wastes |
