Animal Behaviour in relation to targets

| Why is it important for animals to co-ordinate their behaviour with the environment? | So that they are able to make the most of the resources in the environment in order to survive. |
| What causes day and night? | The rotation of the Earth on it's axis. |
| What causes the seasons? | The rotation of the Earth spinning on it's axis . In the warmer months, the earth tilts closer to the sun and in the colder months it tilts further away from the sun. |
| How long is our daily rhythm? | 24 and a half hours |
| What resets our clock each day? | Sunrise/Day Light |
| Explain Alcohol Metabolism (this will be shown on a diagram) | The liver will break down the alcohol better depending on the time of day. |
| What does the Pituatary Gland do? | It makes Melatonin which is the hormone which tells you if it is night or day. |
| What are the three types of daily cycles? | Nocturnal- active at night Diurnal- active in the day Crepuscular- active at dawn and dusk |
| When does the Palolo worm mate? | In November on a day in the last quarter of the moon's cycle. |
| Why is the Palolo worm's mating cycle an advantage? | A large population increase. |
| What are different factors present in summer? | -warm -plants grow (food) -animals mating (babies) -lots of food to feed growing babies -mild conditions so baby animals can survive |
| What are different factors present in winter? | -cold -plants do not grow -no animal reproduction -harsh conditions causing death in many old and young animals |
| Why is temperature not used to measure seasons? | It is very unpredictable. |
| Why is day length used to measure seasons? | Throughout the year, the length of day light changes throughout the seasons making it very reliable. |
| What is solar, stellar and magnetic navigation? | Solar- using the sun's position in the sky. Stellar- using the stars Magnetic- using the Earth's magnetic field. |
| What are the waggle and round dances of a bee and how do they work? | Round- bee moves in a circle which tells the bees that the food is less than 50 meters away. Waggle- bee moves in a figure 8, tells the bees the direction of the flowers in relations to the current sun position. More figure 8's closer the flowers. |
