| non-living | anything that does not have all the characteristics of life |
| structure | the shape and parts of something and how they're put together |
| function | the job something does and how it works |
| level of organization | the bigger and smaller parts of a system that all work together to make the system work |
| organelle | tiny structure inside a cell that carries out a specialized function |
| cell | the smallest living part of an organism that can live by itself |
| tissue | a group of cells working together (a level of organization in a multicellular organism) |
| organ | a group of tissues working together (a level of organization in a multicellular organism) |
| organ system | a group of organs working together (a level of organization in a multicellular organism) |
| organism | science name for a 'living' thing that has all the characteristics of life |
| cell membrane | organelle that is the outer boundary of a cell and which only lets certain things in and out |
| cell wall | organelle in a plant or bacteria cell that is outside the cell membrane and which gives rigid support to the cell |
| cytoplasm | liquid filling of a cell in which the organelles float |
| nucleus | organelle that contains all the instructions for how to run a cell |
| mitochondrion | organelle that chemically reacts oxygen with sugars to release energy, carbon dioxide, an d water |
| chloroplast | organelle in a plant cell that uses sunlight energy to chemically react carbon dioxide with water to produce sugars and oxygen |
| vacuole | organelle that stores materials inside a cell |
| unicellular | adjective to describe an organism made of only one cell |
| multicellular | adjective to describe an organism made of many cells |
| nervous system | organ system in humans that communicates information within the body and communicates information between the body and the outside world |
| muscular system | organ system in humans that makes voluntary and involuntary movement possible |
| skeletal system | organ system in humans that provides structure and protection and which muscles pull against |
| digestive system | organ system in humans that breaks down and absorbs nutrients from food |
| excretory system | organ system in humans that filters out and gets rid of waste |
| respiratory system | organ system in humans that pulls oxygen into the body and gets rid of carbon dioxide |
| circulatory system | organ system in humans that moves blood to all tissues and organs in the body |
