The Cell 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| How do you calculate total magnification? | Multiply eyepiece and objective |
| Protoplasm | All living parts of a cell |
| Two things found in plant cells not in animal | Cell wall and vacuole |
| Ultrastructure | Fine detail of a cell as seen with an electron microscope |
| Cell membrane is made up of? | Phospholipids and proteins |
| Functions of membranes | 1)Retain cell contents 2)Selectively permeable 3)Give some support to cell 4)Recognise molecules that touch them |
| Nucleus | Control centre of the cell |
| Chromatin | Name given to chromosomes when they are not dividing |
| Nuclear pores | Allow mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) to pass in and out of cells |
| Nucleolus | Where ribosomes are made |
| Cytoplasm | Jelly like fluid that suspends organelles |
| Mitochondria | Supply energy to the cell. Are sites of respiration. |
| Chloroplasts | Where photosynthesis takes place |
| Cell wall | Made of cellulose. Supports&strengthens cell. |
| Ribosome | Make proteins |
| Prokaryotic | Do not have a nucleus or membrane-enclosed organelles (bacteria) |
| Eukaryotic | Have a nucleus and cell organelles, enclosed by membranes (more advanced) |
