| Phylum Basidiomycota | "club fungi" -produce spores on basidia, saprophytic or parasitic *mushrooms, smuts, puffballs, shelf fungi |
| Phylum Ascomycota | "sac fungi" -form spores in protective membranes *yeast, diseases that effect trees (Dutch elm disease, chestnut blight) |
| Phylum Zygomycota | -form zygospores, reproduce both asexually and sexually *bread mold |
| Phylum Chytridiomycota | -spores have flagella *chytrids, like muddy or aquatic areas |
| Phylum Deuteromycota | "imperfect fungi", "holding area" -the fungi with sexual reproduction cycles that are not determined *antibiotic, penicillin |
| Phylum Myxomycota | -behave like fungi when they reproduce, and behave like colonial protists when they feed, sometimes placed in kingdom protista *slime mold |
