Cell Organelle

Major Cell organelle

TermDefinition
Cell Membrane Gives cell its’ shape Holds the cytoplasm Controls movement in and out of cell Protect cell
Nucleus Controls most of the cells activity- growth and reproduction Determines how and why proteins are made Holds the genetic information that is passed from parents to offspring
Nuclear Membrane Separate nucleus from the rest of the cell Allows material to move in and out of nucleus
Nucleolus Help in the making of ribosomes
Chromosome Information that determines traits that living things have (eye color, hair color)
Cytoplasm Clear, jelly like substance that makes up most of the cell This is where the chemical rxn take place Mostly made of water Network of canal the move materials around from place to place Takes up all empty spaces
Ribosomes Proteins are made in the ribosome (assemble) Any given cell could have up to a million ribosomes in them
Mitochondria Rod-shaped bodies Power house of the cell This is where food is turned into energy ATP Also plays a role in programmed cell death
Vacuole Liquid-filled space – store food water, and minerals
Centrioles Help in cell reproduction They exist in pairs
Chloroplast Contains green pigment Traps energy from the sun to make food Give plants it green color
Cell Wall Thick outer covering outside cell (plant cell) Protect and support cell
Golgi Apparatus The Golgi body packages proteins and carbohydrates into membrane-bound vesicles for "export" from the cell.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) the ER is continuous with the outer nuclear membrane RER is covered with ribosomes that give it a rough appearance Transports materials through the cell and produces proteins, which are sent to the Golgi body, or inserted into the cell membrane.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) Smooth ER transports materials through the cell contains enzymes and produces and digests lipids (fats) and membrane proteins; Smooth ER buds off from rough ER, moving the newly-made proteins and lipids to the Golgi body, lysosomes, and membranes

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
