What is Biology?

| biome | a group of similar ecosystems with the same general type of physical environment |
| organ system | a group of organs that work together to do a certain job |
| symboisis | a close relationship between organisms of different species in which at least one of the organisms benefits |
| natural selection | the process in which some living things produce more offspring than others, so they pass more genes to the next generation than others do |
| reproduction | the process by which living things give rise to offspring |
| cell | the basic unit of all living things |
| biodiversity | the diversity of living things |
| population | organisms of the same species that live in the same area |
| community | all the populations that live in the same area |
| homeostasis | the process of maintaining a stable internal environment |
| evolution | a change in the characteristics of living things over time |
| ecosystem | all the living things in a given area, together with the nonliving environment |
| gene theory | the idea the characteristics of living things are controlled by genes, which are passed from parents to their offspring |
| organism | a single living thing |
| adaptation | the characteristic that helps a living thing survive and reproduce in a given environment |
| tissue | a group of cells of the same kind |
| biosphere | the part of earth where all life exists |
| cell theory | states that all living things are made of cells, and living cells always come from other cells |
