| chemical energy | The energy in chemical bonds |
| chlorophyll | The pigment in plants that can absorb some wavelengths of light |
| glucose | sugar that is the product of photosynthesis. Energy from sunlight gets stored within the chemical bonds of glucose |
| photosynthesis | The process by which plants combine water and carbon dioxide into glucose using light energy from the sun. |
| decomposer | An organism that breaks down the cells or dead plants and animals into simpler substances |
| ecosystem | All of the living and nonliving things that interact in a specific area. |
| Food chain | A series of events in which one organism eats another resulting in a flow of energy from a plant to the higher level consumer |
| producer | organisms that use light energy from the sun to produce food (sugar) from carbon dioxide and water. |
| Trophic level | The position of an organism in a food chain. |
