Active Transport Movement of materials through a membrane against a concentration
Endocytosis Process by which a cell surrounds and takes in material from its environment
Exocytosis The expulsion or secretion of materials from a cell
Facilitated diffusion Passive transport of materials across the membrane using transport proteins
Hypertonic Solution The concentration of dissolved substances outside the cell is higher than the concentration inside the cell
Hypotonic Solution The concentration of dissolved substances is lower in the solution outside the cell
Isotonic Solution The concentration of dissolved substances in the solutions is the same as the concentration of the dissolved substances inside the cell
Osmosis The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane
Passive Transport Movement of particles across the membrane
Anaphase The third phase of mitosis
Cell Cycle The sequence of growth and division of a cell
Centriole Small, dark, cylindrical structures that are made of microtubules
centromere Controls movement in mitosis
Chromatin long strands of DNA wrapped around proteins called histones
Chromosome a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
Cytokinesis When the cells cytoplasm divides
Interphase The growth period
Metaphase The short second phase of mitosis
Mitosis When two daughter cells are formed, each containing a complete set of chromosomes

Prophase The first and longest phase of mitosis
Sister chromatid Two halves of the doubled structures
Spindle A football like, cage structure consisting of thin fibers made of microtubules
Telophase Finial phase of mitosis

Cancer Malignant growth resulting from uncontrolled cell division
Gene Segment of DNA that controls the production of a protein
