Bio-CellOrganelles

Use these cards to study the functions of the cell organelles.

Cell OrganelleFunction
Nucleus Controls everything within the cell because it holds the DNA; surrounded by a membrane; the "dictator"
Cell membrane Surrounds the entire cell; lets certain things in and keeps other things out; the "police officer" or the "toll booth"
Mitochondria Releases energy from carbs;surrounded by a membrane; the "power plant"
Lysosome Digests cellular wastes; surrounded by a membrane; only in animal cells; the "garbage dump"
Peroxisome Gets rid of harmful chemicals in the cell; surrounded by a membrane; like putting peroxide on a cut or scrape
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Packages proteins/lipids & sends them places WITHIN the cell; a system of tubes near the nucleus that is surrounded by a membrane; the "conveyor belt"
Golgi apparatus Prepares substances to be send OUT of the cell; a series of membrane-bound sacs; the "post office"
Ribosomes Organelle that builds proteins; found in the cytoplasm and on the ER
Vacuole Membrane-bound sac that holds water; many, small ones in animal cells & one, large one in plant cells
Cytoskeleton Provides support for the cell & "roads" for cell organelles to travel on
Cytoplasm The liquid portion of the cell that fills up the empty space
Centrioles Small, tube-like organelles that help prepare a cell for division; found near the nucleus; only in animal cells
Cell wall Provides structure to PLANT cells only; completely surrounds the cell membrane of a plant cells; allows plants to hold themselves up
Chloroplast Allows cells to produce their own food; are green due to pigments; found only in plant cells
Nucleolus Dense region in the middle of the nucleus that is responsible for making ribosomes

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
