Organelles
Functions of organelles in plant and animal cells
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell membrane | protective layer around the cell |
| Cytoplasm | fluid that organelles float in |
| Nucleus | control center of cell; contains DNA |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | location where proteins are transported throughout cell |
| Mitochondrion | "powerhouse" that provides energy for the cell |
| Vacuole | aids in digestion and releases waste |
| Golgi | packages macromolecules for transport |
| Peroxisome | protects cell from its own production of hydrogen peroxide |
| Ribosome | location of protein synthesis |
| Cell wall | rigid barrier that maintains the shape of the cell (plant cells only) |
| Chloroplast | contains chlorophyll; absorbs sunlight (plant cells only) |
| Photosynthesis | process by which plants attain energy from the sun |
| Two organelles found only in plant cells | Cell Wall & Chloroplast |
| Shape of animal cell | more round |
| Shape of plant cell | more rectangular |
