cell organelles

cell organelles and their functions and other biology terms and definitions

TermDefinition
The cell theory All livings things are composed of one or more cells
Cell The basic unit of structure for all living things
Prokaryotic cells DNA is not seperated from the rest of the cell by a nuclear membrane & is not arranged in strands called chromosomes, DO NOT contain mitochondria, DO CONTAIN ribosomes, and are unicellular
Eukaryotic cells ITs DNA is organized into structures which are seperated from the cytoplasm. There are two types of these: Plant & animal
DNA A chemical compound that stores information
Catalyst Substance that changes the rate of a chemical reaction or allows a chemical reaction to occur at a lower than normal temperature.
Nucleus Functions the genetic control of the cell, and contains the chromosomes for a cell.
Chromosomes Composed completely of DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid.
Mitochondria The powerhouse of the cell, the site of cellular respiration, a process at which supplies the cell with energy.
chloroplasts found only in plant cells; contains green pigment and chlorophyll
Lysosomes Contain chemicals called enzymes necassary for digesting certain materials in the cell
Vacuoles For the storing of materials in the cell such as: water, salts, proteins, and more.
Ribosomes Protein synthesis, located on rough ER and also on cytoplasm
Endoplasmic Reticulum Complex extensive network that transports materials throughout the inside of a cell.
Golgi apparatus Modifies, collects, packages & distributes molecules in and out of the cell.
Cilia Short hair like projections responsible for the movement of some animal's cells bacteria or protists
Cell membrane Phospholipid bilayer that encloses the cell ®ulates passage of materials between the cell and its environment; also aids in the protection and support of the cell as well
Nuclear membrane Membrane that surrounds the nucleus of the cell
cell wall Not found in animal cells. Surrounds the cell membrane for protection and support in plant cells.
Cytoplasm semifluid material inside the cell containing molecules and organelles; bound by the cell membrane

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
