Bio / Evolution
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Embryology | Similar features in unborn babies shows common ancestor Similar features in unborn babies show common ancestor |
| Natural Selection | Theory that organisms best adapted to existing conditions are more likely to survive and reproduce |
| Homologous Structure | Structures have similar structure ( common ancestry) but may have a different function (whale fin / human arm bone) |
| Species | Group of similar organisms that can breed and have fertile offspring |
| Analogous Structure | Structures have similar functions, but structure is completely different (NOT common ancestry) |
| Reproductive Barrier | organisms can no longer mate and produce viable offspring |
| Mutation | Random change in DNA sequence |
| Artificial Selection | Humans modify / change a species by breeding for certain traits |
| Vestigial Organs | Body structures /organs that are no longer used by an organism |
| Coevolution | Species evolve in response to changes in another (butterfly / flower) |
| Adaption | Inherited trait that helps an organism survive |
| Convergent Evolution | Unrelated species develop similar characteristics due to similar environments |
| Fossil | Traces of an organism from the past shows transitions among species over time |
| Adaptive radiation | One species gives rise to many new species when introduced to new environments |
| theory | Explanation of observations and experimental results |
| variation | differences in physical traits of an individual from its group |
| evolution | change in inherited traits in a species over time |
