Scientific Method - Biology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| SCIENTIFIC METHOD STEPS | Problem, research, hypothesis, materials, experiment (procedure), observation, and conclusion |
| EXPERIMENT | Organized process used to test the hypothesis |
| HYPOTHESIS | Educated guess about the solution to a problem. |
| DATA | Refers to the observations and measurements recorded during an experiment. |
| VARIABLE | Factor that changes in an experiment. Proper procedure calls for testing only one of these at a time. |
| THEORY | Set of statements or ideas that explain a group of facts or phenomena. |
| CONCLUSION | Judgment based on the results of an experiment. |
| CONTROL | Individual or a standard used to check or verify the results of an experiment. |
| PROCEDURE | Refers to the series of steps taken in order to carry out an experiment. |
| INDEPENDENT VARIABLE | Part of a controlled experiment that influences the dependent variable. |
| DEPENDENT VARIABLE | In a controlled experiment, the part of the experiment that depends on the changes in the independent variable. |
| METERS | Measures length (Tool: Ruler) |
| GRAMS | Measures mass (Tool: Scale - triple beam balance) |
| VOLUME | Measures liters or cm3 (Tool: Beaker (graduated cylinder) ruler, overflow can) |
| TEMPERATURE | Measures in Celsius, K or F (Tool: Thermometer) |
| THEORY | Scientific guesses - possible answers to complex problems. |
| CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT | An experiment set up in duplicate in which a single factor is changed in one setup but not the other |
| SCIENTIFIC LAW | A statement that describes some aspect of a phenomenon that is always true. |
