TermDefinition
Adaptation A body structure or behavior that helps an organism survive in its environment.
Camouflage An adaptation where an organism can blend in to its environment so it is not easily detected. Uses - survival, catching prey
Mimicry An adaptation in which an organism mimics or copies another organism for protection from predators.
Hibernation Animals enter into a deep sleep to survive harsh winters with little food and cold temperatures
Migration Animals leave one area at the same time each year and go to another for survival, food, breeding
Organism Name given to any living thing
Biome Areas of the world that have the climate and habitat for many species.
Ecosystem An ecological system that meets the needs of its population of species
Invertebrate Large class of animals that do not have backbones; snails, worms, etc.
Vertebrate Large class of animals with backbones; mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians
Forest Biome A large area of land that is covered with trees
Wetlands Land that is wet, like the Everglades
Savannah Grasslands of the world
Tundra Land with very little vegetation on top of permafrost
Rainforest Land in warm places with a lot of rainfall each year. Has many different species of animals, plants
Desert An area of land that receives less than 10 inches of rainfall a year
Deciduous Trees and shrubs drop their leaves before the cold or dry season
Coniferous Trees and shrubs have cones and needle-like leaves which stay green all year
Amphibian An animal that lives near water and as an adult has lungs to breathe
Fish Scaly animal with gills to breath that lives in the water
Mammal Warm-blooded animal with fur or hair that gives life to live babies
Reptile Cold blooded animal with rough dry scales
Bird Animal with two legs, beaks, and wings. Covered with feathers
