Vocab chapter 7

TermDefinition
Cell The basic units of life
Compound Light Microscope Uses a series of lenses to magnify objects in steps
Cell Theory The theory that all organisms are composed of one or more cells, the cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of organisms, and all cells come from preexisting cells
Electron Microscope Uses a beam of electrons instead of light to magnify structures up to 500,000 times their actual size
Organelles Membrane-bound structures that with particular functions within eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotes Cells that do not contain any membrane-bound organelles
Eukaryotes Cells that do contain membrane-bound organelles
Nucleus The central membrane-bound organelle that manages or controls cellular functions
Plasma Membrane The flexible boundary between the cell and its environment
Selective Permeability A process in which a membrane allows some molecules to pass through while keeping others out
Phospholipid Lipids with an attached phosphate group
Fluid Mosaic Model The model of the plasma membrane
Transport Proteins Proteins that span the plasma membrane creating a selectively permeable membrane that regulates which molecules enter and leave a cell
Cell Wall A fairly rigid structure located outside the plasma membrane that provides additional support and protection
Chromatin Strands of genetic material, DNA.
Nucleolus Organelle that makes ribosomes
Ribosomes The sites where the cell produce proteins according to the directions of DNA
Cytoplasm Clear, gelatinous fluid inside a cell
Endoplasmic Reticulum The site of cellular chemical reactions
Golgi Apparatus A flattened stack of tubular membranes that modifies proteins
Vacuoles A sac used to store food, enzymes, & other materials needed by a cell
Lysosomes Organelles that contain digestive enzymes
Chlorplasts Cell organelles that capture light energy & convert it to chemical energy
Plastids Group of plant organelles used for storage
Chlorophyll Traps light energy and gives leaves and stems their green color
Mitochondria membrane-bound organelles in plant and animal cells that transform energy for the cell
Cytoskeleton Cellular framework found within the cytoplasm composed of microtubules and microfilaments
Microtubules Thin, hollow cylinders made up of protein
Microfilaments Smalled, solid protein fibers
Cilia short, numerous projections that look like hairs
Flagella Longer projections that move with a whiplike motion

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
