Biology II Chapter 20 Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chitin | Tough, flexible polysaccharide in the exoskeletons of insects and crustaceans and in fungal cell walls. |
| Hypha | Threadlike filament that makes up the basic structural unit of a multicellular fungus. |
| Mycelium | Complex, netlike mass made up of branching hyphae. |
| Fruiting Body | Spore-producing fungal reproductive structure. |
| Septum | Cross-wall that divides a hypha into cells. |
| Haustorium | Specialized hypha of parasitic fungi that grows into a host's tissues and absorbs its nutrients. |
| Spore | Reproductive haploid cell with a hard outer shell that forms a new organism without the fusion of gametes and is produced in the asexual and sexual life cycles of most fungi and some other organisms. |
| Sporangium | Sac or case in which fungal spores are produced. |
| Stolon | Type of hyphae formed by a mold that spreads over a food's surface. |
| Rhizoid | Type of hyphae formed by a mold that penetrates a food's surface. |
| Gametangium | Reproductive hyphal structure of zygomycetes that contains a haploid nucleus. |
| Conidiophore | Spore-producing hyphae of sac fungi. |
| Ascocarp | In sac fungi, the reproductive structure in which haploid nuclei fuse to form a zygote. |
| Ascus | Spore-producing saclike structure of sac fungi. |
| Ascospore | Spore produced by an ascus. |
| Basidiocarp | Fruiting body of basidiomycetes. |
| Basidium | Club-shaped, spore-producing hyphae of basidiomycetes. |
| Basidiospore | Haploid spore released by a basidium during reproduction. |
| Lichen | Symbiotic relationship between a fungus (usually an ascomycete) and an alga or a photosynthetic partner. |
| Bioindicator | Living organism that is sensitive to environmental conditions and is one of the first to respond to changes. |
| Mycorrhiza | Symbiotic relationship between a specialized fungus and plant roots fungal hyphae help plants obtain water and minerals and plants supply carbs and amino acids to the fungus. |
