| posterior | toward the back (vertebral column posterior to sternum) |

| proximal | nearer the point of origin |
| distal | farther from point of origin |
| superficial | toward the surface |
| deep | toward the core |
| parietal | toward the body wall |
| visceral | toward the organs |
