Cranial Nerves

QuestionAnswer
Olfactory Nerve (I) Sensory. Function = sense of smell. Test of smell with standard odor.
Optic Nerve (II) Sensory. Function = vision. Measure acuity and integrity of visual field.
Oculomotor Nerve (III) Motor. Function = eye movement, papillary constriction and accommodation, muscles of eyelid. Test eye movements; look for ptosis (droopy eyelids), pupillary dilation.
Trochlear Nerve (IV) Motor. Function = eye movements. Can't look downward when eye abducted.
Trigeminal Nerve (V) Sensory and Motor. Function = Somatic sensation from face, mouth, cornea; muscles of mastication. Test sensation on face; palpate masseter muscles and temporal muscle.
Abducens Nerve (VI) Motor. Function = eye movements. Test - can't look laterally.
Facial Nerve (VII) Sensory and Motor. Function = controls the muscles of facial expression; taste from anterior tongue; lacrimal and salivary glands. Test facial expression plus taste on anterior tongue.
Auditory/Vestibular Nerve (VIII) Sensory. Function = hearing; sense of balance. Test audition with tuning fork; vestibular function with caloric test.
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (IX) Sensory and Motor. Function = sensation from pharynx; taste from posterior tongue; carotid baroreceptors. Test swallowing; pharyngeal gag reflex
Vagus Nerve (X) Sensory and Motor. Function = autonomic functions of gut; sensation from pharynx; muscles of vocal cords; swallowing. Test same for glossopharyngeal + hoarseness
Accessory Nerve (XI) Motor. Function = shoulder and neck muscles. Test sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles.
Hypoglossal Nerve (XII) Motor. Function = movements of tongue. Test deviation of tongue during protrusion.
