| atom | smallest particle of an element that had the characteristics of that element. |
| nucleus | center of an atom. |
| isotopes | atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons. |
| compound | substance that is composed of atoms of two or more different elements that are chemically combined. |
| covalent bond | a force that holds electrons together. |
| molecule | group of atoms held together by covalent bonds. |
| ionic bond | attractive force between two ions of opposite charge. |
| ion | charged particle made of atoms. |
| metabolism | all of the chemical reactions that occur within an organism. |
| mixture | combination of substances in which the individual components retain their own properties. |
| solution | a mixture in which one or more substances are distributed evenly in another substance. |
| pH | measure of how acidic or basic a solution is. |
| base | any substance that forms hydroxide ions. |
| polar molecule | molecule with an unequal distribution of charge. |
| hydrogen bond | attraction of opposite charges between hydrogen and oxygen. |
| diffusion | net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of low concentration |
| dynamic equilibrium | condition in which there is continuous movement but no overall concentration change. |
| isomers | compounds that have the same chemical formula but different three dimensional structures. |
| carbohydrate | biomolecule composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. |
| lipids | large biomolecules that are mostly made of carbon, hydrogen & a small amount of oxygen. |
| protein | large complex polymer composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, & sometimes sulfur. |
| peptide bond | covalent bond formed between amino acids. |
| nucleic acid | complex biomolecule that stores cellular information in the form of a code. |
| nucleotides | polymers made of smaller subunits. |
