| covalent bond | the force that holds two atoms together |
| molecule | group of atoms held together by covalent bonds |
| ion | a charged particle made of atoms |
| ionic bond | the attractive force between two ions of opposite charge |
| metabolism | all of the chemical reactions that occur within an organism |
| mixture | a combination od substances in which the individual components retain their own properties |
| solution | a mixture in which one of more substances are distributed evenly in another substance |
| pH | a measure of how acidic of basic a solution is |
| acid | any substance that forms hydrogen ions |
| base | any substance that forms hydroxide ions |
| polar molecule | a molecule with an unequal distribution of charge |
| hydrogen bond | a weak bond between hydrogen and oxygen |
| diffusion | the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration |
| carbohydrate | a biomolecule compound of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen |
| lipids | large biomolecules that are made mostly of carbon and hydrogen |
| protein | a large, complex polymer composed of carbon, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur |
| peptide bond | the covalent bond formed between the amino acids |
| nucleic acid | a complex biomolecule that stores cellular information in the form of a code |
