space The 3-dimensional area to be designed, such as a room
line The outline of an object or the obvious lines within it.
form The shape and structure of solid objects
texture The way an object's surface looks and feels
color The most important element of design.
proportion How the shape and size of an object relates to and works with other objects in the room
scale the overall size of an object compared to other objects, especially humans.
balance gives a feeling of equal weight to objects on both sides of a design’s center point.
emphasis FOCAL POINT, or the area of greatest interest in a room or living area.
unity the feeling that all parts of a design work together
rhythm feeling of movement around the room from one point to another
monochromatio Uses variations (shades and tints) of only one color.
analogous Uses three colors next to each other on the color wheel
complimentary Uses one color and the color directly oposite on the color wheel
split-complimentary Uses one color and the two colors next to its complimentary color
triadic uses three colors evenly spaced on the color wheel. Example: red, yellow, blue
accented neutral Uses mainly neutral colors and one color from the color wheel
red Vibrant and Passionate. Can aide in digestion so use it in dining rooms.
blue Lowers blood pressure and relaxes the body. Great for bedrooms.
orange Cheerful and warm. Improves social interaction. Best for living areas.
yellow Can increase metabolism and make babies upset. Difficult color to use.
green Freshest use is in bathrooms. Stands for luck, envy, and hope.
purple Mysterious and Dignified. Inspires daydreaming and creativity.
white Makes a home feel open and fresh. Stands for innocence and cleanliness.
brown Homey, warm and reassuring. Blends with almost any color.
black Sophisticated and Powerful if used sparingly. Use in formal living areas.
grey Disciplined color. Good for rooms that need structure such as offices.
traffic patterns paths people use to get from one area or room to another.
accessories The easiest and least expensive way to transform a room.
backgrounds the walls, floors, windows, and ceilings of a living area.
symmetrical balance Mirror image. Also known as FORMAL BALANCE
asymmetrical balance Objects are unmatched but appear balanced AKA= INFORMAL BALANCE
Color Scheme one or more related colors used together to create a mood or feeling in a room.
Traditional furniture furniture based on styles that have been around for hundreds of years
contemporary furniture furniture that reflects today’s lifestyles.
Functional furniture Furniture that meets a specific need. Usually decorative as well.
