Scientific Method

Scientific Method Step by step process used to solve problems
Hypothesis A possible explanation or solution to a problem in nature based on research
Control Group Group in the experiment not subjected to the variable; used to compare results
Independent Variable Group that is tested; Manipulated by the experimenter
Dependent Variable Group that responds to the changes that are made to the independent variable group; CANNOT be manipulated by the experimenter
Constant Factors that do not change during an experiment
Placebo Something given to the control group (water, sugar pill, etc) so that all aspects of the experiment remain constant
Manipulated Variable Independent Variable
Responding Variable Dependent Variable
Theory Well-supported and well tested explanation for aspects of the natural world; Can be revised as more information is discovered
