Functional Groups

QuestionAnswer
What is a functional group? It is the component of an organic molecule that is most commonly involved in chemical reactions.
What atoms make up a hydroxyl functional group? A hydrogen atom and an oxygen atom.
What atoms make up a carbonyl functional group? A carbon and oxygen atom joined by a double bond.
What atoms make up a carboxyl functional group? An oxygen atom that is double bonded to a carbon atom that is bonded to a hydroxyl group.
What atoms make up an amino functional group? A nitrogen atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms and to the carbon skeleton.
What atoms make up a sulfhydryl functional group? A sulfur atom bonded to a hydrogen atom.
What atoms make up a phosphate functional group? A phosphorus atom bonded to four oxygen atoms, one of which is double-bonded.
Why is ATP an important energy source for life? ATP is a molecule that can transfer energy in cells. By becoming ADP, it can it can release energy that is used by the cell.
What compounds contain the hydroxyl functional group? Alcohols
What compounds contain the carbonyl functional group? Ketones and Aldehydes
What compounds contain the carboxyl functional group? Carboxylic acids
What compounds contain the amino functional group? Amines
What compounds contain the sulfhydryl functional group? Triols
What compounds contain the phosphate functional group? Organic phosphates
