Ch2 Characteristics of Life

| Cell | The smallest unit of life The smallest structure that can carry out the activities of life |
| Cell Membrane | The structure that surrounds the cell and separates it form it’s environment |
| Stimulus | Something that affects an organism |
| Homeostasis | To maintain a constant internal state To maintain a balance |
| Sexual Reproduction | When sex cells from two different parents unite to from an offspring |
| Asexual Reproduction | Reproduction that does not need two sex cells The organism can split in two or bud off and create a new identical offspring |
| DNA – Deoxyribonucleic Acid | The molecule inside all cells that carry the instructions for an organisms traits |
| Metabolism | The sum of all the chemical activities of an organism |
| Producers | Organisms that make their own food (Plants) |
| Consumers | Organisms that eat other organisms for food and energy |
| Decomposers | Organisms that breakdown the remains of dead organisms to consume the nutrients |
| Photosynthesis | The process in which plants use the energy from the sun to make it’s own food and also give off oxygen |
| Proteins | MEATS A molecule that is made of amino acids that is used to repair body tissues and muscles |
| Carbohydrates | Sugars, breads, pasta, veggies Food molecules that give the body energy |
| Lipids | Fats and oil |
| Phospholipids | A lipid found in the cell membrane |
| Nucleic Acids | The main molecule found in DNA |
