Genetics Ch13
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Gene | a unit of information - piece of DNA chromosome - each individual typically has two genes for each trait |
| Locus | The exact position a gene is found on a chromosome |
| Alleles | Different forms of the same gene |
| Homozygous | Two Identical Alleles in a given Gene Pair |
| Heterozygous | Two Different Alleles in a given gene pair |
| Dominant Allele | It is expressed in a heterozygous individual - Represented by a capital letter |
| Recessive Allele | It's not expressed or is masked in a heterozygous individual - Represented with a lowercase letter |
| Genotype | The actual genetic makeup that an individual has for a trait |
| Homozygous dominant | two dominant alleles in a given gene pair -AA |
| Homozygous recessive | two recessive alleles in a given gene pair - aa |
| Heterozygous | two different alleles (one dominant and one recessive) in a given gene pair - Aa |
| Phenotype | The actual physical or physiological expression of a gene pair |
| P Generation | Parental Generation |
| F1 generation | First filial generation - Offsprings from parents |
| F2 generation | second filial generation - offspring from f1 parents |
| Monohybrid cross | A genetic cross involving the inheritance of one trait |
| Dihybrid cross | A genetic cross involving the inheritance of two traits simultaneously |
| Autosomal inheritance | Traits carried on autosomes |
| Sex-linked inheritance | Traits carried on sex chromosomes |
