TermDefinition
gross income a person's total wage or salary before any deductions are made.
net income the amount or money left after subtracting deductions from gross income.
fixed expenses expenses that are the same each month.
varialbe expenses expenses tht change or vary from month to month.
electronic funds transfer a system that allows a person to deposit or withdraw funds and make payments without using cash or checks.
overdraft a check is written for money that is not available in the account.
installment credit a one-time loan extending over a set period of time, to be repaid with interest.
revolving credit credit that is extended to a person before any purchases are made.
service charge a fee charged for writing a credit contract.
Truth in Lending Act requires lenders to disclose in dollar amounts the exact cost of using credit.
credit rating a record of whether or not a person has paid his or her bills on time.
citizen a person who formally owes allegiance to a government.
register when a citizen shows documents to prove that he or she has the right to vote in elections and fills out the required forms.
legislatures law-making governmental bodies.
ordinances local laws or regulations.
misdemeanor a less serious carime that may be punished by a fine or short prison term of less than a year.
violations acts that violate or break a local ordiance and can result in a fine or short jail term.
defamation spreading lies that harm another person.
slander verbally spreading lies that harm another person.
libel writing false information about another person with the intention of causing him or her harm.
battery a use of force resulting in physical contact with a person that the individual did not permit.
assault a threat to cause phyiscal harm to a person
negligence harming someone without intent.
jury a group of citizens who are selected by the court system to determine the outcome of a trial.
plaintiff the person filing a lawsuit and taking a case to court.
defendant a person accused of wrong doing.
public defender a lawyer appointed by the state for a defendant in a criminal case who cannot afford a lawyer.
mentor a person to look to for guidance and encouragement.
