ECE1-13 Diversity and Acceptance

TermDefinition
Bias Any attitude, belief, or feeling that results in unfair treatment of an individual because of his or her differences
Race a certain heredity from a particular geographic region or a particular religion
Racist excluding , judging, or demonizing a particular group of people because they are different in appearance, religion or culture
Gender being male or female
Sexist Belief or practice that belittles, insults or under values persons due to their gender
Culture A way that a family does things, speaks, lives including what they eat.
Religion Who or what you worship, and what you believe in that shapes your ideas of what is right/acceptable.
Diversity The term often used today when talking about all the qualities people have that make them different from one another
Pro-social Helping behaviors that are for the good of others and evidence empathy
Homophobia being fearful of or having a strong aversion to people who are transgender or have sexual interests in a same gender partner
Poverty Level very low family income (in the US in 2021 < $26,500 annual income)
ESOL English for speakers of Other Languages
Native Being the place or environment in which a person was born, indigenous.
Bullying purposely (consistently) putting another student down to make them feel bad about themselves
No Place For Hate An organization and movement that offers a pledge asking for the general population to commit to never participating in or accepting hatred
Tolerance The practice of accepting others differences, since all people are also important and worthy of kindness, care and understanding
Homelessness An experience of people who do not have a permanent place to live.
Physical disability Any body or physical difference that limits or restricts movement
Intellectual disability Any cognitive developmental limitation that limits the ability to function independently. (spread the word to end the word)
Learning disability Any of a wide description of conditions that cause learning and school to be significantly more difficult. (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, etc. )
