ECE3-02 Value of Play in Learning

TermDefinition
Learning Centers Areas clearly defined for specfic types of play; for example, Reading, Music, Blocks
Traffic Pattern Direction of movement that children take as they move from one part of the classroom to the other
Cubby A small space for storage of Personal items
Unoccupied Play When a child actually isn't playing at all
Solitary Play Engaging in play alone rather than with others
Onlooker Play Watching other childern play rather than play with them
Parallel Play Children playing next to eachother but not with eachother
Associative Play Playing with the same toy but not with others
Cooperative Play Plsying together and agreeing on play themes and activites
Engaged Complete focus on what a student/child is doing
Functional Play Playing with a certain point on a certain activity for a certain reason or purpose
Constructive Play Directing the play towards a certain outcome or product
Dramatic Play Imitation of real life situations during play
Structured Time Daily routine everyday
Free Choice Allowing the students to choose whatever they want to do during play time
Manipulative Toys and materials children operate and change with their hands
ITERS & ECERS Rating Scales used to create and identify excellent toddler and early childhood environments.
Open Ended question A question that cannot be answered with one word, that encourages children to talk or share details
Theme a topic or idea that the decorations or components of a lesson plan or learning environment are centered around
