TermDefinition
Infectious diseases Agents which invade the body and cause diseases such as colds or the flu
Pathogen Any agent that causes disease
Mucous membranes Epithelial tissues that protect the interior surfaces of the body that may be exposed to pathogens
Inflammatory response A series of events that suppress infection and speed recovery
Histamine A substance that increases blood flow to the injured area and increases the permeability of surrounding capillaries
Phagocytes White blood cells that ingest and destroy pathogens and foreign matter
Interferon A protein produced by cells infected with viruses
Immune system The cells and tissues that recognize and attack foreign substances in the body
Antigen Any substance that the immune can recognize and react with
Immune response The reaction of the body against an antigen
Cell-mediated immune response An immune response that centers on killing cells infected by an antigen
Humoral immune response An immune response centered on destroying pathogens that have invaded the body
Antibody Protein that binds to and aids in the destruction of pathogens
Memory cells Lymphocytes that response the second time they meet an antigen or invading cell and aid in the destruction of that cell more quickly than the first time
Immunity The ability to resist an infectious disease
Vaccination The introduction of antigens into the body to cause immunity
