Cardiovascular system The blood, heart, and blood vessels
Atrium The upper chapter of the heart
Ventricle The lower chamber of the heart
Valves Flaps of tissue in the heart that open only in one direction
Pulse A series of pressure waves within an artery caused by the contractions of the left vesicle
Blood pressure The force that blood exerts against the inside walls of a blood vessel
Arteries The large, muscular vessels that carry blood away from the heart
Capillaries The network of tiny vessels where gas, nutrient, and waste exchange occurs
Vein A large blood vessel that carries blood to the heart
Lymph The fluid within the lymphatic system
Plasma The liquid medium of blood
Red blood cells Cells within blood that transport oxygen to cells in all parts of the body
White blood cells Blood cells that help defend the body against disease
Hemoglobin The iron-containing protein in red blood cells that binds oxygen
Antibodies Proteins that help destroy substances, such as bacteria and viruses
Platelets Fragments of very large cells that help to clot blood
Antigen A substance that stimulates an immune response
