Food chains

TermDefinition
Food chain A series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.
producer A person, company, or country that makes, grows, or supplies goods or commodities for sale.
primary consumer Any organism that consumes or feeds on autotrophs or decaying matter.
secondary consumer An organism that largely feeds on primary consumers.
Tertiary consumer An organism that largely feeds on secondary and primary consumers.
Quaternary consumer quaternary consumers are defined as animals at the apex of the food chain. They eat every species that is below them and do not have to worry of being eaten.
Autotrophs An organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.
Heterotrophs An organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances.
Herbivores Animals that feed on plants
Carnivores Animals that feed on meats
Omnivores Animals that feed on both plants and meats.
