| Food Chain | A series of events in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and by being eaten. For example, a red fox eating a grasshopper, that eats plants. |
| Producer | An organism that can make its own food. For example, plants and algae. |
| Primary Consumer | Animals that eat primary producers. For example, herbivores. |
| Secondary Consumer | Animals that eat primary consumers. For example, rats and fish. |
| Tertiary Consumer | Animals that eat secondary consumers. For example, snakes and fish. |
| Quaternary Consumer | Animals that eat tertiary consumers. For example, hawks and racoons. |
| Autotrophs | Organisms that make from their own food from sunlight or chemical energy. For example, grass and algae. |
| Heterotrophs | An organism requiring organic compounds for its pricipal source of food. For example, tiger and shark. |
| Herbivores | Consumers that only eat plants. For example, rabbits and deer. |
| Carnivores | Consumers that only eat meat. For example, polar bears and wolves. |
| Omnivores | Consumers that eat both palnt and meat. For example, humansd and rats. |
