Give 4 diseases in which exercise can be a vital repressor CHD, Atherosclerosis, Diabetes, Obesity.
Give 2 negatives of exercise: Injury and Possible suppressed immune system.
How can heavy exercise suppress the immune system? The hormones produced during exercise can be a part of suppressing the immune system.
What are the two types of injury which can occur from exercise (or sport etc): Traumatic and 'Wear and Tear'
Give an example of a Traumatic Injury: Torn ligament in the knee or other area from an impact.
Give an example of a Wear and Tear injury: Osteoarthritis - when the cartalige surrounding a joint becomes worn and the bone swells and bone beings to rub against other bone, or swelling occurs from inflammation.
How can Knee Joint repair be done: Through Arthroscopy (Key Hole surgery on the knee).
What is Arthroscopy:
Give an alternative treatment to damaged joints and loss of limbs: Prosthesis: The use of artificial limbs and joints can be used to replace missing or damaged ones.
How is a knee replacement carried out: Patient has end of Femur and Tibia shaved down and removed, then metal alloy or placetic replacements for the joint are placed in.
What are the advantages of joint replacement/prosthesis? It relieves long term pain and can restore alot of functionality to the joint.
What are the negatives of joint replacement/prosthesis: The joints can become worn very quickly, and complications can arise.
There are different types of prosthesis, what can they be? There are athestic prosthesis which look good and there are more specialised ones which preform a specific function such as blade legs for sprinting.
Give two performance enhancing drugs:@ EPO: Which increases the amount of red blood cells. Anabolic Steroids: Increase the muscle mass, strength and increase aggression.
Give two ethical positives to using Performance enchancing drugs: Could be seen as leveling the playing field as not everyone has the same access to the facilities. Allows almost anyone to potentially compete at a higher level.
Give two ethically negative points of performance enhancing drugs: They make it unfair for those who achieve greatness naturally. They are illegal.
