Ecology Vocab 1
| Term | Definition |

| Biology | bio - life ology - study of The study of living things. |
| Organism | the scientific word for living things. (ex. bengal tiger) |
| Habitat | A place that an organism lives ,grows ,and thrives. (ex. forest) |
| Biotic Factor | The parts of a habitat that are living, or once living, and interact with organisms. (ex. plants) |
| Abiotic Factor | The parts of a habitat that are non-living and interact with organisms. (ex. water) |
| Species | A group of organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce. (ex. siberian husky) |
| Population | All of the members of one species living in a particular area. (10,000 red foxes in 200,000 sq. mi) |
| Community | All of the different populations that live together in an area. (ex. owls, bison, prairie dogs,snakes, etc.) |
| Ecosystem | THe community of the organisms that live in a particular area, along with their non-living, make up an ecosystem. |
| Ecology | eco - environment ology - study of study of different environments |
| Birth Rate | the number of births per 1,000 individuals for a given time period. (ex. year 2010 rate increased by 4x) |
| Death Rate | the number of deaths per 1,000 individuals for a given time period. (ex. year 2010 rate increased by 3x) |
| Immigration | moving into a population. |
| Emigration | leaving a population |
| Population Density | the number of individuals in an area of a specific size. |
| Limiting Factor | an environmental factor that causes a population to stop growing or decrease in size |
| Carrying Capacity | The largest population that an area can support |
