| Biology | Bio- Life ology- study of study of living things |
| Organism | The scientific word for living things. Ex- A prairie dog |
| Habitat | An environment that provides the things a specific organisms needs to live, grow, and reproduce. Ex- Forest |
| Biotic Factors | The parts of a habitat that are living, or once living, and interact with an organism. Ex- Flowers |
| Abiotic Factors | The nonliving pars of an organism's habitat. Ex- Rocks |
| Species | A group of organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce. Ex- Black- tailed prairie dogs |
| Population | All members of one species living in a particular area Ex- Prairie dogs in the Nebraska town |
| Community | All the different populations that live together in an area Ex- Prairie including hawks, snakes, prairie dogs |
| Ecosystem | The community of organisms that live in a particular area Ex- Prairie, desert, oceans, ponds |
| Ecology | The study of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment |
| Birth Rate | The number of birth per 1,000 indivisuals for a given time period Ex- If the birth rate is greater the population increases |
| Death Rate | The number of deaths per 1,000 individuals for a certain time period. Ex- If the death rate is great than the population decreases |
| Immigration | Movement of individuals out of a population's area Ex- Birds immigrate down to the south for warmer conditions |
| Emigration | Movement of individuals out of a population's area Ex- When polar bears can emigrate down south and never come back to their homes |
| Population Density | The number of individuals in an area of a specific rate Ex- Pumpkin plants growing in a farmers garden |
| Limiting Factor | A factor present in an environment that controls process, particularly growth Ex- The population can only grow to the degree that predation will allow it |
| Carrying Capacity | The number of people, other living organisms, or crops that a region can support without environmental degradation Ex- How many people there van be in a life boat |
