Vocabulary words for science.

Cell Membrane The membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell.
Cell Wall The outermost layer of a the cell.
Chloroplast A plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place.
Chromosomes A threadlike structure found in the nucleus carrying genetic information.
Endoplasmic Reticulum A network of membranous tubes within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell.
Golgi Bodies A netlike structure in the cytoplasm of animal cells.
Mitochondria An organelle that makes energy for the cell.
Nuclear Membrane The double-layered membrane enclosing the nucleus of a cell
Nucleus The central control center that controls the activity of the cells.
Ribosomes A minute particle consisting of RNA and associated proteins, found in large numbers in the cytoplasm of living cells
Vacuole The storage place for the cell.
Prokaryote A single celled organism that does not have a nucleus.
Eukaryote Organism that contains multiple cells and complex structures.(Contains a nucleus)
Mitosis A cell division that results in 2 daughter cells each the same as the parent.
Meiosis A type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each with half the chromosome number of the parent cell
Monomer A molecule that can be bonded to form a polymer.
Polymer A substance that has a structure built up completely from a large number of similar units bonded together.
Carbohydrates Group of organic compounds that serve as a major energy source.
Lipids Any of a class of organic compounds that are fatty acids
Proteins Any of a group of complex organic macromolecules that contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and usually sulfur and are composed of one or more chains of amino acids
Nucleic Acids A complex organic substance present in living cells
