| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Wall | The strong, stiff structure outside of the cell membrane of a plant that provides support. |
| Cell Membrane | The Thin structure that surrounds the cytoplasm and nucleus of plant and animal cells. |
| Golgi Bodies | An organelle that manufactures and moves materials in the cytoplasm of a cell. |
| Nuclear Membrane | A thin layer that surrounds the nucleus and separates it from the rest of the cell. |
| Nucleus | Controls the activities of the cell, the "brain". |
| Ribosome | Organelle located on the endoplasmic reticulum that provides protein for the cell. |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | An organelle found within cytoplasm that transports materials through a cell. |
| Cytoplasm | A jellylike substance that fills the cell and provides energy. |
| Mitochondria | Organelle that produces energy in the cell. |
| Vacuole | An organelle that stores water and waste. Animal cells have many tiny vacuoles while plants have one big vacuole. |
| Chloroplast | An organelle found in the plant cell that produces food for the cell. |
| Lysosome | Organelle found in animal cells that gets rid of waste. |
| Chromosome | Located in the nucleus, they contain the code that controls the cell and transmits genes. |
| Prokaryote | A cell without a nucleus. |
| Eukaryote | A cell with a nucleus. |
| Mitosis | For unicellular organisms, this is asexual reproduction. For multicellular, this is growth. |
| Meiosis | Sexual reproduction for multicellular organisms. |
| Monomer | A simple molecule that can be joined to make bigger molecules. |
| Polymer | Many monomers; complex molecule. |
| Carbohydrates | The organic compound that provides energy. |
| Lipids | The organic compound that stores and protects energy. |
| Proteins | The organic compound that uses the energy to work. |
| Nucleic Acids | The organic compound that contains genetic information, DNA, and RNA. |
