| gene | a segment of DNA for a particular protein, which in turn codes for a trail for characteristic, ex. the gene for height |
| chromosome | composed of genes; when an organism reproduces the chromosome is what carries the genetic information from parent to offspring |
| allele | the two forms of a gene, the tall allele and the short allele for the gene of height |
| diploid | cells with 2 copies of each chromosome,having received one copy from each parent |
| haploid | cells with only one copy of each chromosome |
| somatic cell | a regular body cell of an organism, contains 2n |
| gamete | the sex cell of an organism that contains only one copy of an allele for a given trait |
| homologous chromosome | the 2 copies of each chromosome in a diploid |
| dominant | the stronger form of an allele that is always expressed with a capital R |
| recessive | the weaker form of an allele that is hidden by the dominant allele if it is present. expressed with a lower case r |
| homozygous | the allele combination where both alleles are dominant RR or recessive rr called true breeding |
| heterozygous | a combination of both alleles Rr called hybrid |
| phenotype | the physical appearance of an organism |
| genotype | the actually genetic make-up of an organism |
| cross | refers to the purpose reproduction of 2 organisms |
| probability | the likelihood or chances of getting an offspring with certain characteristics |
