Gene Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Gene A segment of DNA that codes a specific protein.
Chromosome Composed of genes; How genes are crossed over from parent to offspring.
Allele The two forms of a gene.
Diploid Cells with 2 copies of each chromosome.
Haploid Cells with only 1 copy of each chromosome.
Somatic cell Regular body cell of an organism, diploid.
Gamete Sex cell of an organism, 1 copy of allele, haploid.
Homologous Chromosomes 2 Copies of each chromosome in a diploid cell.
Dominant "Stronger" Form of allele, always expressed.
Recessive "Weaker" Form of allele, hidden by dominant allele.
Homozygous Allele combination where both alleles are dominant, or both recessive.
Heterozygous Allele combination where one of each type of allele is present.
Phenotype physical appearance of an organism (Tall, Short).
Genotype The actual genetic makeup of an organism
Cross Purposeful reproduction of 2 organisms.
Probality Likely hood of producing offspring.
