Biology Vocab (H.S)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cell membrane | thin structure surrounding cytoplasm and giving support and shape to a cell |
| cell wall | stiff outer barrier located outside of the cell membrane of a plant cell; provides extra support for and gives a shape to the plant cell |
| chloroplasts | organelles in the cytoplasm of plant cells that make sugar molecules as food for plant cells through photosynthesis |
| chromosomes | located in nucleus; contain code that controls the cell and transmits heredity characteristics |
| cytoplasm | gel-like fluid that takes up most of the space within the cell |
| endoplasmic reticulum | organelle found in cytoplasm that transports material around the cell |
| golgi bodies | organelles in the cytoplasm that manufacture and move material |
| mitochondria | organelles in the cytoplasm that produce energy for the cell |
| nuclear membrane | structure surrounding and protecting the nucleus of a cell |
| nucleus | structure near the center of the cell containing the cell's DNA |
| ribosomes | structures located on the endoplasmic reticulum that provide protein for the cell |
| vacuole | organelle in cytoplasm that stores water, food, and wastes; also helps to dispose of wastes |
| prokaryote | organism lacking a nucleus |
| eukaryote | organism possessing a nucleus |
| mitosis | cell division process in which the daughter cells end with just as many chromosomes as the parent cell |
| meiosis | cell division process in which the daughter cells end with half as many chromosomes as the parent cell |
| monomer | simple molecule that can join together with others to form a macro-molecule, or a polymer |
| polymer | a natural or synthetic substance that is built up of a number of molecular units bonded together |
| carbohydrates | large collection of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues; can be broken down to release energy in the animal body |
| lipids | large collection of fats, oils, waxes, and fat soluble vitamins found in the human body |
| proteins | large collection of organic compounds that perform a wide range of necessary tasks in living organisms |
| nucleic acids | complex organic compounds that transmit genetic information |
