| Trimester | A period of about three months |
| Conception | Pregnancy begins with the union of a sperm cell and an egg cell |
| Zygote | Formed when the separate nuclei of sperm and egg combine into one nucleus |
| Prenatal Development | All development that occurs between conception and birth |
| Blastocyst | A hollow ball of cells that implants itself in the uterus;name for a developing baby from after zygote stage until the embryo stage |
| Placenta | A special organ formed during pregnancy that functions as the interchange between the developing baby and its mother |
| Umbilical Cord | A flexibile cord that contains blood vessels and connects the placenta to the developing baby |
| Amniotic Fluid | Fluid inside the amniochorionic membrane that regulates the baby's temperture, cushions the baby against injury, and allows the baby to move around easily |
| Embryo | Nmae for the developing baby from the second to the eighth weeks of pregnancy |
| Fetus | The name for a developing baby form the ninth week of pregnancy until birth |
| Miscarriage | The natural ending of a pregnancy before the fifth month; spontaneous abortion |
| Stillbirth | The natural ending of a pregnancy after the fifth month; spontaneous abortion |
| Preganancy-Induced Hypertension (PIH) | A complication of pregnancy that affects a woman's kidneys,heart,or blood circulation |
| Rubella | A virus that can complicate pregnancy, causing miscarriage,stillbirth, or congential disorders |
| Rh Factor Disorder | A disorder that can complicate pregnancy. It occurs when an Rh- mother gives birth to a baby who is Rh+ |
| Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) AIDS (acquired immundeficiency syndrome) | A number of infections and conditions that are passed form one person to another through sexual contact |
| HIV (human immundeficiency virus) | A virus that causes the disease AIDS. HIV is often transmitted sexually; has no cure |
