Anatomy of a Leaf

parts and functions of a generic leaf on a cellular level

waxy cuticle keeps water inside the leaf
upper epidermis ventral side of leaf
palisade mesophyll lots of chloroplasts for photosynthesis
spongy mesophyll lots of chloroplasts for photosynthesis
xylem allows water to get to the cells
vein functions as a highway for food and reactants in photosynthesis

lower epidermis dorsal side of leaf
guard cells allow the stomata to open and close
stomata opening or pore that allows CO2 (carbon dioxide) to get inside the leaf
chloroplasts organelle in which photosynthesis occurs
equation for respiration C6 H12 O6 + 6(O2) => energy (ATP) + 6(H2O + CO2)
