Chapter 11 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Interdependence Where the events that affect one member of the family often affects others consciously or unconsciously.
Caring family A family in which each person sees the relationship between his or her behavior and the success of the family as a unit.
Responsible Being dependable and reliable.
Respect Seeing someone as a worthwhile individual.
Concern Having a special intrest in what happens in the lives of other family members.
Open Expression Sharing, Leveling, and accepting.
Sharing Letting others of the family know your personal thoughts, feelings, and opinions.
Leveling Letting others know how you feel about them and their behavior.
Accepting This means respecting the other person's right to his or her own opinions and feelings, even if we dont agree.
Crises Major problems that have a great effect on the people involved.
Domestic Violence Family violence
Physical Abuse Abuse that involves hitting, kicking, tripping, chocking, bitting, or threatening with a weapon.
Emotional Abuse Purposely harming the self-concept of a family member by insulting and undermining a persons confidence.
Sexual Abuse Abuse that involves unwanted sexual contact.
Child Abuse The physical or mental injury, sexual abuse, negligent treatment, or maltreatment of a child under the age of 18.
Incest Sexual activity between persons who are closely related.
Child Neglect Failure to meet a child's physical or emotional needs.
Physical Neglect Neglect that occurs if parents or persons legally responsible dont supply food, clothing, shelter, education, and medical care.
Emotional Neglect Failure to provide children with love and affection.
Substance Abuse Involves misusing drugs, including alcohl, to a potentially harmful level.
Divorce Occurs as a result of stress in various areas, such as tension in marriage,financial problems, family violence, and substance abuse.
Custody The assumption by a parent of the responsibility for the day-to-day decisions affecting the health, education, and welfare of the children.
Joint Custody Custody in which the parents share equally in the responsibility for the children, with each parent having equal rights in dicision making and spending time with the children.
Suicide The taking of one's own life.
Support Group A group of people who share a similar problem or concern.
