Basics of Evolution

QuestionAnswer
What is evolution? Evolution is cumulative changes that occur in a population over time.
What is species? A group of interbreeding or potentially interbreeding populations that is reproductively isolated from other such groups.
What is genes? Portions of an organism's DNA that carry the code responsible for building that organism in a very specific way.
What is 'survival of the fittest'? A term used to describe natural selection, a mechanism that drives evolutionary change.
How can evolution refine existing adaptations? A complex structure may have evolved from a simpler structure having the same basic function.
How was chitin modified to serve an additional function? They made chitin made it even more watertight as the animals became adapted to living on land.
How were flippers of penguins modified for a new function? They made the wings of the penguins stronger so they can swim more faster.
What is embryology? The study of the processes of multicellular organisms as they develop from fertilized eggs to fully formed organisms.
